Anyway, one of the shops sold religious paraphenalia, including some lovely handpainted cloth depicting the elephant god Ganesha. I tried to talk the vendor down from the 400-rupee price he quoted, but he told me (through a translator) that if he dropped the price he would surely to to hell. Good for him that Hinduism doesn't include any restrictions on price gouging white guys.
